What is AVIRT training for higher education?

AVIRT — Active Violence Immediate Response Training — replaced the former AVERT program as the official HSI standard in August 2025. Unlike passive awareness programs, AVIRT emphasizes immediate action in the critical minutes before law enforcement arrives. For college campuses, this means training students, faculty, staff, and campus security to work together as a coordinated first-response community.

Our instructors bring real-world experience that textbooks can't replicate. Brandon S. Beaver (Founder) and Travis E. Beaver (Navy Corpsman & Firefighter) have trained individuals and organizations across Texas and the surrounding region, combining combat medical expertise with workplace safety best practices.

Scenario-Based Active Violence Training

Hands-on drills recreate real campus environments — lecture halls, dormitories, student unions, and outdoor spaces. Students and faculty practice life-saving decision-making under realistic conditions, building muscle memory for actual emergencies.

Beyond traditional active shooter drills

AVIRT's approach is grounded in the same principles that prepare military medics and first responders. We address the unique active violence challenges of higher education environments:

  • Open campus environments with multiple uncontrolled access points
  • Large gathering spaces — auditoriums, stadiums, dining halls, quad areas
  • Residential populations living on campus in dorms and apartments
  • Diverse communities including international students, visitors, and contractors
  • Stop the Bleed integration — hemorrhage control before EMS arrives

Our instructors combine Navy Corpsman combat medical training, firefighter emergency response, and EMT certification — real-world experience that translates directly to campus preparedness.

Frequently asked questions about AVIRT campus training

What is AVIRT and how is it different from active shooter drills?
AVIRT (Active Violence Immediate Response Training) is the current HSI-standard program that replaced AVERT in August 2025. It focuses on the immediate minutes of an active violence incident — before law enforcement arrives — covering run-hide-fight adaptation, hands-on medical response (Stop the Bleed), multi-agency coordination, and recovery. It's trauma-informed, scenario-based, and far more effective than passive video training.
What is the time commitment for campus AVIRT programs?
We offer flexible options: 2-hour introductory awareness sessions, half-day response training, full-day immersive exercises with live scenarios, or multi-phase semester programs. All programs are customized around your academic calendar and can accommodate large groups with on-site delivery across Texas and surrounding states.
Is AVIRT training compliant with the Clery Act?
Yes. Our AVIRT training supports Clery Act compliance by strengthening your campus emergency response program and meeting requirements for active shooter preparedness training. We provide full documentation including attendance records and training summaries for your Annual Security Report (ASR).
How do we choose the right active shooter training for our campus?
Look for training that is hands-on (not just video), led by instructors with real emergency response experience, includes medical response components like Stop the Bleed, and can be customized to your specific campus layout and population. AVIRT by Safety Is A Mindset meets all of these criteria as an HSI-authorized program delivered by Navy Corpsman and firefighter-trained instructors.
Do you train faculty separately from students?
Yes. We provide distinct training tracks for faculty/staff (classroom management, decision-making under pressure, leadership during crisis), students (situational awareness, peer response, escape routes), campus security (unified command, first response protocols), and administrators (policy, communication, reunification). Joint exercises are also included for coordination.
Do you provide on-site training at our campus?
Yes — all AVIRT training is delivered on-site at your campus. We come to you, which means scenarios are built around your actual buildings, layouts, and population. We serve colleges and universities across Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, and surrounding states. Call (870) 532-8278 to schedule.
