BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS (BBP)

OSHA standard 1910.1030 · HSI curriculum

Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and HIV are invisible but exist in droplets of blood. Master the science of barriers, decontamination, and post‑exposure protocol.

🧪 Pathogens · exposure · control

Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms in human blood that cause disease. Our training goes beyond definitions: we simulate real‑life scenarios in healthcare, biotech, custodial, and emergency response. Every participant learns the hierarchy of controls — elimination, engineering controls (sharps containers, self‑sheathing needles), work practice controls (hand hygiene, no recapping), and finally PPE.

📋 exposure risk by body fluid

fluidrisk levelcommon transmission
Blood, semen, vaginal secretionsHIGHneedlesticks, sexual contact, mucous membranes
Cerebrospinal, synovial, pleuralmoderateinvasive procedures, lab accidents

Urine, vomit, sweatnot considered infectiousunless visibly bloody

🧤 engineering & work practice controls

  • Sharps disposal — puncture‑proof, closable, labeled. never force‑fill.
  • Self‑sheathing needles / needleless systems — where available, mandated by OSHA.
  • Hand hygiene — immediately after glove removal. Use antiseptic.
  • Specimen handling — leakproof containers, secondary containment.
  • Contaminated laundry — bagged at location, minimal handling.
  • Regulated waste — red bags or biohazard symbols.

🛡️ personal protective equipment (PPE) matrix

Our PPE fundamentals course details each barrier. For BBP: gloves (latex/nitrile), gowns (fluid‑resistant), masks+face shield (if splash), and CPR mouth barriers. We stock pocket masks in every first aid kit — see our CPR page.

❓ BBP — frequent questions

⛑️ What’s the difference between HBV, HCV and HIV?
Hepatitis B (vaccine preventable) survives outside the body up to 7 days. Hepatitis C (no vaccine) is chronic for most. HIV is fragile but serious. Our BBP course covers each timeline.
⛑️ Do I need BBP training if I’m not in healthcare?
Yes — OSHA applies to anyone with occupational exposure: custodians, teachers, first responders, even manufacturing (first aid personnel). See industries we serve.
⛑️ How often is BBP refresher required?
Annually, plus whenever tasks change. We offer online refresher that meets HSI standards.
⛑️ What should be in a post‑exposure kit?
Immediate first aid (wash with soap/water), incident report forms, and access to confidential medical evaluation. We cover this in on‑site training.
⛑️ Are there specific rules for labs / biotech?
Yes — additional containment, biosafety cabinets, and autoclaving. Check biotech page for details.
⛑️ Does AVIRT cover bloodborne scenarios?
Absolutely. During active violence, bleeding control is critical. We combine AVIRT with BBP to protect rescuers.
⛑️ Which disinfectants kill bloodborne pathogens?
EPA‑registered hospital disinfectant (tuberculocidal) or 1:10 bleach solution. See chemical safety.
