Fire Extinguisher Safety Training Online

A portable extinguisher can stop a small fire in seconds, but only if the user picks the right one, uses it correctly and knows when to walk away. This course covers all three decisions.

What Fire Extinguisher Training Online Teaches

Extinguishers hang on walls in nearly every workplace, yet many employees have never pulled a pin. In a real fire, uncertainty costs time. This fire extinguisher training online course explains how fires start and grow, how extinguishers are classified, how to decide whether to fight a fire at all, and how to operate an extinguisher with the PASS technique.

It is the hands-and-equipment companion to our broader emergency and fire preparedness course, which covers alarms, evacuation and planning.

Fire Classes and Matching Extinguishers

ClassFuelTypical extinguisher
AOrdinary combustibles: wood, paper, cloth, many plasticsWater, foam or multipurpose dry chemical (ABC)
BFlammable liquids and gases: fuels, solvents, oil-based paintCO2, dry chemical (BC or ABC), foam
CEnergized electrical equipmentCO2 or dry chemical; never water
DCombustible metals such as magnesium and titaniumSpecial dry powder agents for the specific metal
KCooking oils and fats in commercial kitchensWet chemical (Class K)

Always read the label. Using the wrong agent, such as water on a grease fire, can spread the fire.

The PASS Technique

  1. Pull

Pull the pin, breaking the tamper seal.

  2. Aim

Aim the nozzle or hose low, at the base of the fire, not at the flames.

  3. Squeeze

Squeeze the handle steadily to release the agent.

  4. Sweep

Sweep from side to side across the base until the fire appears out, then watch for re-ignition.

Fight or Flee? Questions to Answer First

The course teaches learners to fight a fire only when every answer supports it.

  • Has the alarm been activated and has someone called 911?
  • Is the fire small and contained, such as a wastebasket, and not spreading?
  • Do you have the right type of extinguisher, and are you trained to use it?
  • Is there a clear exit behind you, with the fire in front of you?
  • Is the room free of heavy smoke?
  • If any answer is no, or the extinguisher empties without putting the fire out, leave and close the door behind you.

OSHA Training Requirements

Under 29 CFR 1910.157, when an employer provides portable fire extinguishers for employee use, it must provide an educational program on general extinguisher use and the hazards of incipient-stage firefighting when employees are first hired and at least annually after that. Employees designated to use firefighting equipment as part of an emergency action plan must receive training on that equipment, also at hire and annually.

Some employers instead require total evacuation and do not expect employees to use extinguishers; different requirements then apply. Check which approach your emergency action plan takes.

Pairing the Course With Hands-On Practice

Knowing PASS on paper is not the same as discharging an extinguisher for the first time, with the noise, the recoil and the cloud of agent. The online course works well as preparation, but practical training builds real confidence. We can add extinguisher practice to an onsite safety training visit at your facility, or as part of broader in-person safety classes.

Who Should Take It

  • All employees where extinguishers are provided for employee use
  • Designated fire wardens and emergency response team members
  • Kitchen, maintenance and hot-work crews
  • Warehouse, retail and hospitality staff
  • Supervisors responsible for monthly extinguisher checks

Fire Extinguisher FAQs

How long does an extinguisher last when discharged?

Common portable extinguishers empty in a matter of seconds, which is why they are only for small, early-stage fires.

What should employees check monthly?

That the extinguisher is in its place, unobstructed, the gauge is in the operable range, the pin and seal are intact and there is no visible damage. Annual maintenance is done by a qualified person.

Can we use this course for the annual requirement?

Many employers use online training for the annual education program, then add hands-on practice when possible. Keep completion records for each employee.
