Standard Active Shooter Training Is Not Enough for Research Facilities

Biotech laboratories, pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, and research facilities face a level of emergency complexity that standard active shooter training simply cannot address. When an active violence incident occurs in a laboratory setting, staff cannot follow the same protocols as office workers or retail employees.

A researcher in a BSL-2 lab cannot drop everything and run without first securing biological specimens. A pharmaceutical technician working with volatile chemical compounds must follow decontamination steps before evacuating. These realities require a completely different approach to active violence response — and that is exactly what AVIRT (Active Violence Immediate Response Training) delivers when properly adapted for the life sciences industry.

At Safety Is A Mindset, our AVIRT instructors bring military and emergency medical service experience directly to your facility. Founder Brandon S. Beaver and his team of Navy Corpsman, EMT, and firefighter-certified trainers understand how to integrate active violence response with the operational realities of your laboratory environment.

Unlike generic corporate safety programs, our on-site AVIRT biotech training is customized to your specific facility layout, your containment protocols, and your workforce. We conduct a facility assessment before training to ensure every protocol we teach reflects the real conditions your staff will face in an emergency.

What Is AVIRT? Understanding the Program

AVIRT — Active Violence Immediate Response Training — replaced the older AVERT (Active Violence Emergency Response Training) program on August 27, 2025. The HSI-certified AVIRT program takes a broader, more empowering approach: rather than focusing solely on reacting to active shooter events, AVIRT equips participants to make critical decisions in the first moments of any active violence scenario.

For biotech facilities, this means your staff will learn to assess the threat, secure laboratory environments, communicate with emergency services, provide immediate medical aid using Stop the Bleed techniques, and coordinate with hazmat teams — all within a single, cohesive training program delivered on-site at your facility.

AVIRT Biotech Training Is Essential For

Any employee who works in or around laboratory environments should complete AVIRT training. Active violence incidents can happen anywhere — preparation is everyone's responsibility.

🔬

Research Scientists & Lab Technicians

Staff working directly in labs need protocols that account for containment requirements and hazardous materials during an emergency.

🏗️

Facility & Safety Managers

Those responsible for emergency response planning must understand how AVIRT integrates with existing laboratory safety protocols and EAPs.

🔒

Security Personnel

On-site security must coordinate with lab staff, hazmat teams, and law enforcement. AVIRT provides a common language for that coordination.

💊

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Staff

Production floor employees working with chemical compounds require specialized evacuation and response protocols unique to their environment.

🩺

Clinical Research Staff

Research coordinators, clinical trial staff, and data management teams working in research facilities need foundational active violence response skills.

👔

Administrative & Executive Staff

Office staff, HR, and executives sharing a building with laboratory operations should understand the facility's unique emergency response requirements.

What's Covered in Biotech AVIRT Training

Our 4-hour on-site program is built around the specific hazards and operational realities of biotech and research environments. Every module is customized to your facility.

1

4

Chemical & Biological Hazard Integration

How to respond when an active violence incident coincides with or triggers a chemical or biological release. Decontamination prioritization, hazmat team coordination, and what to communicate to first responders.

5

Communication & First Responder Coordination

How to report an incident clearly and effectively. Coordinating with law enforcement, hazmat teams, and emergency medical services. Who communicates what, to whom, and when during a multi-hazard incident.

6

Scenario-Based Practice & Facility Walkthrough

Hands-on scenario exercises conducted in your actual facility using your real floor plan, access points, and laboratory layout. Practice builds muscle memory so staff respond instinctively in a real emergency.

Why Biotech Facilities Are High-Risk Environments

Research facilities face a unique intersection of security threats and laboratory hazards. Most active violence preparedness training ignores the laboratory dimension entirely — leaving your staff dangerously underprepared.

  • ✓ Restricted access creates delayed emergency response
  • ✓ Biological materials cannot be abandoned without risk
  • ✓ Chemical hazards can compound an active violence event
  • ✓ Standard evacuation routes may be unsafe in a lab incident
  • ✓ Staff trained in standard protocols may make dangerous decisions

Post-AVIRT Training Improvement Rates

Staff Emergency Readiness +76%
Active Threat Response Confidence +82%
Medical Emergency Capability +89%
Overall Safety Culture Score +94%

Every Threat Your Biotech Facility Faces

Our AVIRT biotech training addresses the full spectrum of emergencies unique to research and pharmaceutical environments.

🧪

Chemical Hazards During Incidents

Spill response, fume hood safety, and chemical exposure protocols when an active threat occurs simultaneously with a chemical emergency.

🧬

Biological Containment

BSL containment protocols, pathogen exposure procedures, and decontamination steps that preserve both human safety and containment integrity.

Active Violence in Restricted Areas

Response protocols specifically designed for labs with keycard access, airlock entries, and areas where standard evacuation routes may be blocked or unsafe.

🚑

Medical Emergencies in the Lab

Cardiac events, traumatic injuries, anaphylaxis, and chemical exposure responses — all requiring different protocols than office or retail environments.

🔥

Fire & Hazardous Material Evacuation

Coordinated lab evacuation that accounts for flammable chemicals, compressed gas, cryogenic materials, and other lab-specific fire hazards.

🔒

Security Breach in Research Areas

Unauthorized access to secure research areas, cleanrooms, and IP-sensitive laboratories — including protocols to protect both people and proprietary research.

The Biotech Emergency Response Protocol

AVIRT training builds a four-step response framework that your staff will follow instinctively during an emergency — because they've practiced it in your actual facility.

1

Assess

Simultaneously evaluate the active threat and any lab-specific hazards before taking action

2

Contain

Secure your immediate area — lock down the lab and maintain biological/chemical containment

3

Respond

Execute emergency protocols, provide immediate medical aid, and alert first responders with complete hazard information

4

Recover

Coordinate decontamination, research continuity, and return to safe operations with first responder guidance

Biotech AVIRT Training FAQs

Answers to the most common questions from biotech and pharmaceutical facility managers about AVIRT training.

What is AVIRT training for biotech facilities? +

AVIRT (Active Violence Immediate Response Training) for biotech is a specialized program that combines active violence response with laboratory safety protocols. It covers how research staff should respond to active threats while maintaining containment in BSL-2/3 labs, handling chemical exposures, and coordinating with hazmat and first responder teams.

How long is biotech AVIRT training and how is it delivered? +

Standard biotech AVIRT training is 4 hours, delivered on-site at your facility. We accommodate half-day and full-day options for larger or more complex research environments, and we schedule training across multiple shifts to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

How is AVIRT different from standard active shooter training? +

Standard active shooter training does not account for laboratory environments. AVIRT for biotech integrates containment protocols, chemical hazard awareness, restricted access navigation, and coordination with hazmat teams — critical for research facilities that cannot simply evacuate without risking biological or chemical release.

Do you train staff in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories? +

Yes. Our instructors understand biosafety level containment requirements. We develop protocols that allow staff to respond to active threats while maintaining critical containment procedures to prevent secondary hazards from biological or chemical materials.

Is AVIRT training available outside of Texas? +

Yes. Safety Is A Mindset provides on-site AVIRT training nationwide. While based in Texas, our instructors travel to biotech facilities across the United States. Call (870) 532-8278 to discuss training at your location.
